Author Visits!

In November we're treated to two great author visits.

On November 8, Caroline Laurent, winner of the Prix Maison de la Presse 2020, will be here. Franco-Mauritian author Laurent's book An Impossible Return is a novel based on the heartbreaking story of the people of the Chagos Islands, who were evicted by the UK government in the 1960s and barred from ever returning to their homes.

Then, on November 15, Mason Ball is here to celebrate the life of his father, cartoonist Murray Ball, the man who could see the quirks of human nature and capture them with the stroke of a pen. Mason will tell the stories behind the most iconic characters, including those immortalised in Footrot Flats. Tickets are free - available from Palmerston North Central Library (Main Desk, First Floor) or Palmerston North Paper Plus.

What's On

Sledge vs. The Labyrinth

Local author/teacher/basketballer Nick Horvath has just released his debut novel, which e describes as "a non-stop action slaughter fest". Think Lee Child but even meaner, apparently!

Keep your eye out for a copy in the City Library soon.

Summer Reading Programme

The ever-popular Summer Reading Programme returns soon, with registrations opening on November 27. There’s a section for ages 4-10, and another for ages 11-13, and both cater to readers of all abilities, with incentives as they progress. Places are limited, so keep your eye on the City Library webpage, or the Library Children's Facebook page, for details.

What's On

"Pre-Release Reserves"

In the Children's area, there are so many shiny new books being released every month, it's hard to keep up. But if you tell the staff which books you like, they'll automatically reserve a copy for you when the Library places an order.

Terms and Conditions: only covers Children's and Young Adult books; works best for specific authors or series (eg. "please reserve any new DogMan books"); no guarantees on when a book will be released - that's up to the publisher.

To put your name on the list, click the button below to send an email, and use the subject line "Pre-release Reserves".

Low Vision Support Group

Join with our monthly group for people with deteriorating vision who share ideas, information and laugh with sympathy. The group is an opportunity to make new friends, discover new hobbies and enjoy the humour of the moment.
Everyone welcome.

Meeting Dates

Tidbits

Random Linkage

Random cool/interesting stuff from around the net.

Salman Rushdie has written a memoir about the attack which left him blind in one eye and with a damaged left hand. Knife is the author's way to "answer violence with art".

How do you phone? Is there a right way and a wrong way to use one? Of course there is! Here's an article to either enrage or placate you.

Are you a fan of the 'miscommunication trope' in romance books or movies? One wonders how many times people have yelled at their TV: "just talk to each other, you idiots!" Well, here's an article in defence of the trope... when done well!

Fairies - They're Real, Right?

This is an old story, but always worth sharing again.

Under the Sun

A great article on Audioculture about Jenny McLeod's 'Under the Sun' - commissioned for Palmerston North in 1971
