Kia ora! Welcome to the December newsletter from Palmerston North City Library

December & January Hours

Check this blog post for a full list of hours over Christmas and the New Year.

The last New Books Displays go up on Dec 14, and return on Jan 11. But don't worry: even if the Library is closed, you can still get books by using Libby or BorrowBox - the Library will never leave you stranded!

Holiday Hours

Ashhurst Library 30th Anniversary

In 1993 Ashhurst Library moved from its previous location into the old Post Office building. There's a long tradition of community support for libraries in Ashhurst!

A 30-year celebration was held on Friday Dec 8 to mark the occasion. Check out this wonderful gathering of librarians past and present!

Xmas Parade(s)

The City Library was delighted to collaborate with Woolly Riot for the Palmy Christmas Parade! Our Mobile Library bus was yarnbombed with a kaleidoscope of colour and festive cheer. Check out their amazing creation for the parade on the First Floor of the Central Library until 22nd December.
Special thanks to Gunhild Litwin for her time and generosity.

A Seat at The Stomach

Lovely to see a mention of Blueprint Makerspace in the latest newsletter from The Stomach!

Recently they held an event called Don't Go Jason Waterfalls - "A special show to honour the memory of Jason Harkett, a member of CSSI, a musician and a friend."

"The order of ceremony included the official unveiling of the Jason Harkett Memorial Garden Bench, generously donated by Neighbourhood Support Palmerston North as a part of their ‘Seats in Streets’ initiative and was wonderfully beautified by Abi Symes, Jordan Kupe with some help from the team at Blueprint MakerSpace."

Pop along, have a sit on the bench, then go and say hi to the Stomach team! You can subscribe to their newsletter here, to keep up to date with all the great things they do.

The Case of the Disappearing App

Unfortunately the Library app is unavailable and will probably not be back in action for a few months.

We're aware this is very inconvenient but it's out of our hands and all we can do is apologise.

In the meantime, you can still renew books, place holds, and check on due dates by logging in to your account on the website, emailing us at pncl@pncc.govt.nz, calling 06 3514100, or popping in to visit us at one of the Library locations.

Thank you for your patience with this issue.

Get a Room!

The Central Library has rooms available to hire. Some of them are very cheap and others are free. These rooms are for community groups and other non-commerical usages, and there are various sizes available, to accomodate everything from a large-ish meeting to a smaller one-on-one scenario.

You can even book in a large TV screen to plug in a laptop for presentations in some of the rooms.

As always, if you'd like to know more, ask a librarian! Contact pncl@pncc.govt.nz

Paul Dibble

We were saddened to hear of the passing of Paul Dibble. The City Library is honoured to have an amazing Dibble sculpture at the main entrance; one of many wonderful works you can find all around the city.

Te Manawa currently has an exhibition of Dibble's work, which comes highly recommended.

'Versions Tuawhā' Book Launch

Congratulations to everyone who participated in the Versions project this year! At the end of November we launched the anthology Versions Tuawhā, and had a wonderful range of contributors come along to celebrate. You're amazing!
We hope it inspires even more people to have a go at writing something for next year's Versions.
You can find Versions Tuawhā, as well as previous years' anthologies, at the City Library.

The Poetry Machine

Need a quick poetry fix?

‘The Poetry Machine’ has been coded to randomly select and print a poem for you. The ‘machine’ is a repurposed receipt printer linked to a Raspberry Pi and a giant red button (just because). It is housed in a gorgeous old record player box.

At present, we have about 60 poems from a range of submitters (newbies through to experienced poets, school children to more mature folk).

The Poetry Machine will be at the Central Library from Wednesday 13th December for about a month (excluding our closed period for the holidays). Come and grab yourself a poem!
