Lunar New Year

Many cultures celebrate a Lunar New Year, and the Library is joining the party!

Following hot on the heels of the Lunar New Year event in Te Marae o Hine/The Square on Jan 27, there’s a Lunar New Year display on the First Floor of the Central Library, from Feb 1-12.

This display is being put on by Global Parents Support, and from February 15-29, the same group will create a display of traditional costumes from around the world.

Join us in celebrating diversity at the Festival of Cultures World Food, Craft and Music Fair in Te Marae o Hine/The Square on Saturday Feb 24. The Mobile Library will be bringing some Community Language books along.

Find out more about digital resources in different languages that are available through the library, too. Like LOTE4Kids, Mango Languages, and more!

Play Libraries

Here's a great write-up about Play Libraries, an initiative to provide access to play equipment for young people, at our Community Libraries.

Play Libraries

Miss Nicky Says

The Library was pleased to host a musical introduction to te reo Māori with Miss Nicky Says on Wed 10 Jan.

But don't forget, there are regular Karu Kanakana sessions at community libraries. These sessions involve storytelling, games, waiata and fun for the whole whānau, provided by Toitū te Reo. Keep an eye on the Library website for session times and dates in 2024.

In addition, every Wednesday at 10am there's a Kōrero Kawhe session at the Central Library. If you're looking for a place to practice speaking te reo Māori, come along for a kawhe to build your kōrero skills in a relaxed environment. Aimed at adults wanting to build confidence to kōrero Māori.

What's On

Summer Reading

As of 9/1 at 9 am, Summer Reading participants have…

Completed 1,185 activities
Most popular activity is to ‘Visit a new park with your family’ followed by ‘Try a new walking path with your family’
Earned 2,923 badges
Written 181 book reviews
Read 62,870 minutes (that is like reading 43 days in a row non- stop)

Reminder that the Summer Reading Finale is at 6pm, Thursday 25 Jan at the Esplanade. Have you done all your checkins?

Last year by the end of the programme, participants read 94,000 minutes, so the challenge is to see if we can beat that by the end of the month. Can we get to 100,000?

Random Linkage

Greta & Valdin by NZ author Rebecca K Reilly makes BookRiot's list of 'exciting releases for 2024'. Yes, we got to read it well before they did in the US!

A great piece on what books reviews are for.

Looking for some lists to start (respectful, calm) arguments? Try these: 21 movies we hated in 2023 (from Stuff.co.nz), and the most polarising fantasy books (from BookRiot).

There's been a bit of talk about lack of critical coverage for local music recently, but there's a fair chunk of it in Graham Reid's "Best of Elsewhere 2023".

A big Whamageddon fail in early December

A cyberattack leaves systems still down at the British Library, months later.
