Kia ora! Welcome to the Palmerston North City Library newsletter.

At time of writing, it's halfway through NZ Music Month and there have already been some wonderful performances. The image above is of the sublime SG Wesleyan Youth Choir - if only you could hear this photo!

This year, as well as performances ranging from choral to metal, there was an intriguing display of musical memorabilia from MAVtech. Thanks, MAVtech!

On Friday June 28, the public holiday for Matariki | Puanga is observed. While we celebrate Matariki | Puanga on one day, it is actually a period of days in the lunar month of Pipiri. Matariki | Puanga signifies ‘Te Mātahi o te Tau’ or the ‘Māori New Year’. Nationally, the holiday is generally referred to as Matariki, but Rangitāne o Manawatū traditionally give prominence to Puanga, an important star near the Matariki cluster that can be easier to see in this part of the motu. Matariki | Puanga is a time to remember those who have passed, celebrate the present and plan for the future. Check out our Kaupapa Māori webpage for a great list of resources, information and activities!

Rockstar pathologist Cynric Temple-Camp is here on June 14, for the launch of his latest book 'The Final Diagnosis' (click on the title to reserve a copy). The bestselling author of 'The Cause of Death' and 'The Quick and the Dead' returns with more stranger-than-fiction stories of death, disease and murder - as well as new perspectives on high-profile cases.

Another thing to keep an eye out for - on June 23, there's a Local Authors Day at Central Library, where authors can get to know each other, meet local readers, and share knowledge and encouragement.

Both of these sessions are part of the Writers and Readers Winter Series. Keep an eye on the City Library website for more information.

The annual First Voice workshop is happening in June. This is where a group of Palmerston North Intermediate Normal School students will write a story in their first language with help from mentors. These precious stories are collected and published and each of the students will receive a copy of the book. What a great way to encourage and celebrate their first language!

You can find previous years' First Voice books in both physical and electronic versions on the City Library catalogue.

This month's ‘Off the Page’ author talk features Saige England in conversation with Thom Conroy, on Friday June 21. Saige is the author of The Seasonwife. She has an MA in Creative Writing from the International Institute of Modern Letters IIML at Victoria University of Wellington. In her career as a conflict-journalist Saige won media awards and worked in various conflict zones.

Saige and Thom will discuss historical fiction, focusing on the challenges for Pākehā writers exploring empire and racism. As a historical fiction writer with a background in journalism, it is important to explore the spaces between the lines, find what is not well known, and consider how these stories might now be told.
On Saturday June 22, Saige will be conducting a workshop on writing historical fiction, focusing on spreading the net wide, hauling in and storing, what to leave in and what to leave out.

If you've been thinking of reading Lioness by Emily Perkins, now is the second-best time. The best time would have been before it won the Jann Medlicott Acorn Prize for Fiction, as it will now be in huge demand. Luckily, the City Library has copies in ebook, e-audio, and physical formats! Congratulations to Emily on winning this hugely significant prize.

Flight safety instructions given in NZ Sign Language on an Air New Zealand plane. The article has put "world first" in quote marks, so it's unclear if it's actually a world first, but it's still pretty cool!

Takahē are running their Matariki Short Story Celebration again this year. They're looking for stories under 500 words, but be quick - it closes on June 15. (Sorry if you're reading this after then - you can start getting ready for next year!)
