'He Taonga te Pūmahara | Memory Matters' is a brand new collection targeted at people with dementia and memory loss, as well as their whānau and caregivers. Currently in New Zealand there are 70,000 people with a diagnosis of dementia mate wareware. This is expected to increase to 170,000 by 2050.

Memory Matters was developed in consultation with groups across NZ, as well as local organisations like Alzheimer’s Society Manawatu.

Along with books, the collection includes games, puzzles, jigsaws, activity boards, and tactile fidget widgets. One item that is sure to be popular are the simple music players – preloaded with hundreds of songs and themed to suit the listener e.g. classical, popular hits through the decades, and NZ music.

You can read an article from the Manawatū Guardian about it here.

Memory Matters debuted at Roslyn Library in July, and is now at Central Library too! (Fiction Zone, First Floor.)
August is Family History Month, and the programme is packed with great sessions that will help you learn how to trace your lineage. Library staff, in association with the New Zealand Society of Genealogists, will share their genealogy superpowers, tips and tricks, as they show you the best resources to use. There is a talk about DNA tests, a movie showing, and a session where you're invited to bring in a taonga that relates to your own family history.

Aligning with the maramataka Māori, Mahuru Māori this year will start on the 3rd September and run through to the 3rd October. Whatever level you’re at, this is an opportunity to challenge yourself to learn and speak te reo Māori.
At the library there are plenty of resources to help on your reo journey and there are also weekly Manu Hāpai waiata group and Kōrero Kawhe sessions, where you can join in no matter what your level.
You can find more information at mahurumaori.com.

During Mahuru we also celebrate Te Wiki o te Reo Māori from the 14th – 21st September.  On 14 September 1972, a call for the recognition and revitalisation of te reo Māori was presented to parliament by representatives of Ngā Tamatoa, Victoria University's Te Reo Māori Society, and the New Zealand Māori Students Association in the form of a petition with over 30,000 signatures. What started as Māori Language Day in 1972 was extended to Māori Language Week in 1975.

Keep an eye on the library website for activities during this time.
What's On

The City Library’s Poetry Machine is going on tour! The machine is very excited to be packing its bags ready for a trip to Christchurch, where it will be taking part in the fabulous WORD Festival.

If you haven’t seen it already, the poetry machine is housed in an old portable turntable chassis, and when you push the button, it prints out a randomly-selected poem for you, from its collection of verse submitted by local writers. We’re hoping it will come back with submissions from Christchurch, in a form of North-South poetry exchange.

If you happen to be in Christchurch while WORD is on, be sure to pop into Christchurch Library's Tūranga and loudly proclaim "oh cool, our poetry machine is here!".

The Writers and Readers Programme for August is packed with poetry and prose.

The Off the Page sessions for August feature the purr-fect poetry of The Meow Gurrrls on National Poetry Day, Friday 23 August (5:30pm), and they will run a workshop on Saturday 24 August at 10:30am. Both sessions will be held at the Central Library. A collective from Wellington and the Kapiti Coast, the Meow Gurrrls are named after their regular meeting place, Meow Cafe in Wellington.

Also in August, Adam Claasen will be doing an illustrated talk on his new book The Grid published by Massey University Press. The Grid is a biography of Air Commodore Keith 'Grid' Caldwell, telling the story of his exploits during the First World War.
This talk is a collaboration between Massey University Press and Bruce McKenzie Booksellers. See the 'Writers and Readers' programme on the Library website for details of this session. (Use the handy button below!)
