Bookshop superstars Gareth and Louise Ward will be at the Central Library in September.

Firstly, on Friday the 6th of September, at 6pm, hear them talk about their new co-authored book The Bookshop Detectives: Dead Girl Gone. They will answer questions about the co-authoring process, and how their venture into cosy mysteries is going.

Then, on Saturday the 7th at 10:30am, they will be running a writing workshop. Registrations at pncl@pncc.govt.nz or 027 292 9965

Louise reviews books for various outlets including Radio New Zealand, and is an accomplished musician as well as running the two Wardini bookshops in Hawkes Bay with her husband. Gareth has been a Royal Marine Commando, police officer, evil magician and zombie(!), and has written several successful books: firstly his YA fantasy/steampunk series Rise of the Remarkables and The Traitor And The Thief, and more recently his adult fantasy series Tarquin the Honest.
Did you know you have access to more than 16 million books through the Palmerston North City Library?
How, you may ask?
Well, hundreds of libraries around New Zealand have an agreement to borrow and lend books to one another. So, if Palmerston North City Library doesn't have it, another library in New Zealand might, and they will post it to us.
The service is called inter-library loans, or simply Interloans!

What you need to supply is
·         The title of the Book you want
·         Book author
·         Your name
·         Your email
·         And be 18+ years old

The cost is usually $5.00, but can sometimes be $20.00 depending on where the book is available from. If it comes to more than $5.00 we will check with you before ordering.
Of course you can also suggest that the City Library purchases an item - more on that next time!

For Interloans, simply request through our website at www.citylibrary.pncc.govt.nz/inter-library-loans, or in person at any of our Library locations.

Happy Borrowing!

There are so many great authors visiting in September!
Here are some highlights:
- An Evening with Karen McMillan, author of Turbulent Threads, a passionate novel of freedom and love in Victorian New Zealand. Karen is the author of bestselling novels The Paris of the East, The Paris of the West and Brushstrokes of Memory. She also writes non-fiction that helps and inspires others, and she is the author of the popular Elastic Island Adventure series for children.
Friday 13 September

- CARE (Massey University) Activist in Residence Alexander Heffner: Civil Discourse in an Uncivil Age. Heffner discusses the effects of divisiveness on discourse, campaigns, and governance as well as the influence of new media, dis/misinformation, and filter bubbles that polarize society. Drawing upon his experience as a public affairs broadcaster, civic educator, and journalist covering U.S. politics, Heffner will lead a discussion.
Monday 16 September, 6pm.
Ground Floor, Central Library.

- Off the Page: Creative Writing Showcase. The finest student writers from Massey University Te Kunenga Ki Pūrehuroa will present a selection of their work at the City Library. The writers represent a range of genres and writing styles, each with their own individual voice.
Friday 20 September, 5:30pm.

- Book launch of 'Untold Stories – World War Two Displaced Persons who settled in Palmerston North'. Between 1949 to 1952 up to 5000 Displaced Persons from across Europe came to New Zealand to provide skilled labour. This book follows the journeys of six people from war torn Europe to New Zealand, the role of the Pahīatua camp in acclimatising the migrants, and the research challenges specific to this historical era.  The book is the third part of a larger project that consisted of an exhibition at Square Edge Arts Centre and a documentary film, shown earlier this year.
Saturday 14 September, 2pm.
Second Floor, Central Library.

Best-selling Aotearoa author Graci Kim said that more adults should read 'middle-grade' books. You're missing out if you don't - there are some amazing titles out there!

Kate Preece has written a picture book in English, te reo Māori, and ta rē Moriori. Ten Nosey Weka is out via Bateman Books. You can reserve a copy from the Library.

Great article by Murdoch Stephens (of Laurence & Gibson Publishing) about the book as an object.
1News article about Dame Naida Glavish. Hard to believe that the words 'kia ora' could cause such a ruckus...
Some people can't imagine sounds in their head (like recalling a song). Wow!
