Poll Results
In the last newsletter we asked whether you read Fiction, Non-Fiction, or both. The results overhwelmingly show what a diverse and flexible group you are! Two-thirds of respondents read both Fiction and Non-Fiction. Why limit yourself, right?

Fiction slightly edges out Non-Fiction for the remaining votes.

Your Favourite Reads of 2022

Last month we shared our favourite books of 2022, and asked you to tell us what yours were.

Some of the books that you enjoyed include:
The School for Good Mothers by Jessamine Chan

There are more of your recommendations on this blog post.
Thanks so much for sharing!

Book Return Slot Locations

Just like the Great Eye of Sauron, our book return slots never close.
So, next time someone scoffs 'one does not simply walk to the library and return one's books whenever they like', you can tell them they're wrong. You absolutely can return your books in our return slots whenever you like!

Each library location has an external book slot and an internal book returns area. Central Library has three, just like the number of rings for the Elven-Kings under the sky. (Yes, I'm going to continue to labour the Tolkien references, thank you very much for asking.)

There's one returns slot facing the Square, one on George Street, and one to rule them all... er, inside near the main entrance on the Mezzanine Floor.

On top of all that, if you happen to be on a long quest around the Shire, there are conveniently-placed book returns bins in many locations

If you have an idea for where we should put another returns bin, please let us know!

Local History Week 2023

Every city and town has stories to tell, and Palmerston North is no different. Our city has its own unique identity and history that makes it the place it is in 2023, and that’s what Local History Week sets out to reveal. The week-long celebration of who we are and how we got here is set to take place with a change of date, (27 February – 5 March).  It will be part of a wider Heritage Month (27 February – 2 April).

Activities will include:

Workshops
Talks/lectures
Walks/tours
Writers and Readers
Performance
Displays/exhibitions

Pencil in these dates and we will let you know more as the programme is confirmed.

Random Linkage

Random cool/interesting stuff from around the net.

The 80s are back! Check out this cool retro aerobics class started by two sisters in Christchurch.

Also going back in time, here's an article about one of Palmerston North's most successful acts - The Skeptics, and their third album. (Note: the article is PG, but Content Warning: it contains a link to the video for their song AFFCO, which is one of the things that contributed to me becoming a vegetarian - Craig.)

There's now a BorrowBox YouTube channel. BorrowBox supply us with books on CD, and they also provide the great BorrowBox ebook & e-audio app. Their channel includes interviews with authors and narrators.

Finally, we were saddened to hear of the recent passing of one of the true guitar greats, Jeff Beck. Musically adventurous even way back in the days with The Yardbirds, Beck continued to forge his own path, producing a signature sound right up to his recent collaboration with Ozzy Osbourne. For some superlative playing, check out the DVD of 'Performing This Week Live at Ronnie Scott's'.
