Vaka Festival - Bill Brown Park

We're looking forward to being a part of Vaka Festival with an exciting range of activities throughout the day.

Vaka Festival is an opportunity to celebrate Pasifika cultures, languages and values. It's also a great way to connect with a large number of service providers in the community.

Bring your aiga/whānau along to this free, family-friendly event organised by our friends at the Niuvaka Trust.

Esplanade Day Fun

Staff members Angela, Grace, Belinda and Rob represented Palmerston North City Library at Explore Esplanade Day recently. From an overall crowd of 8000 we had over 800 visitors through the Mobile Library and 249 interactions with staff at the tent.

Some of the activities were:

Themed book display (Charles Darwin, evolution, birds, general science)
Scavenger Hunt
‘Collaborative Claw’ activity, with a variety of objects to try to pick up
Science themed augmented reality colouring activity
Spontaneous Storytime
Badge-maker

Just a few of the many things we talked with people about were:

Library Podcast - Shelf Awareness
Local History Week
Children’s Programming
Blueprint Makerspace

What's On

Census 2023

Palmerston North City Library will be hosting sessions where you can get assistance with filling out your census form.

During these drop-in sessions, there will be Census staff/volunteers from Stats NZ on hand to help.

You simply need to bring your paper forms or online code.

Outside of these times, you are welcome to come in and use the computers and free wi-fi to self-complete your census forms.  Library staff cannot fill out the forms for others, but we can put you in touch with people who will help.

Library Newsletters - Extended Range!

Along with this newsletter, and our Fiction New Titles newsletter, there is now a Heritage newsletter. The Heritage newsletter will be sent out periodically, keeping you up to date with activities and resources to do with local history and archives. Local History Week is only one of the things that the Heritage staff are involved in!

Newsletters are great because you only get sent things that you want to hear about., and you can opt out at any time. See all the options on our Newsletter Signup page.

Bicycle, Scooter, Trike Feedback

Do you have a bright idea about bicycle parks? Would you like to see more spaces to park bicycles, scooters, trikes, etc. at library locations? We'd love to hear what you think.

Random Linkage

Random cool/interesting stuff from around the net.

A Nelson teacher's song for kids gets famous on TikTok!

Giselle Clarkson's comic in The Sapling about doing school visits as an illustrator is pretty cool.

As John Lydon once said: anger is an energy. But only when funnelled in a healthy direction, obviously... like this punk collective for older women.

Here's a great article from Te Mana Whakaatu - Classification Office about how they classify movies or shows that contain nudity. Their work is incredibly nuanced and they have to balance a lot of considerations when they classify something. Their newsletter/blog is well worth subscribing to!

Related to that, how did a show called Naked Attraction get approved to go on TV?

National Library continues to put the focus on collection management processes, and we thank them for that, because it's at the core of a library's purpose. Every library in existence has to de-select titles if they ever want to select new ones, or else double the size of their buildings every year (unlikely). You will soon be able to have your say on the National Library collection policy, which will be especially interesting to you if you're keen on their mission to ensure that "New Zealand's documentary taonga in words, sounds and pictures are collected, protected and accessible".

Eleanor Catton's Birnam Wood is getting great reviews. Closer to home, Palmerston North's own Helen Lehndorf has a book out this month: A Forager's Life.
