April Hours

It's all go in April!

School holidays run from 7 April - 23 April. Keep your eye on the What's On page on our website for all the cool activities.

Easter runs from Friday 7 April to Monday 10 April, and the library is closed over that period, including Saturday and Sunday.

Then we have ANZAC Day, which is on a Tuesday this year.

Click on the button below to see a blog post with more information, along with some options for if you run out of books on a closed day!

A Cornucopia Of Quilts

If you've ever used the stairs between the Central Library's Ground Floor and Mezzanine Floor, you'd have walked past the handiwork of Pam Eastcott, who has been bringing in a new quilt to display every month for almost seven years!

This kind of sustained effort can't last forever, and Pam's latest quilt - The Rainbow Serpent - will be her last one for the library. As she says, it's time to 'pass the mantle on to someone else to show their personal style'.

She hopes her quilts 'have given pleasure to those who have seen them and perhaps created a bit of discussion about choice of colour or fabric and style'.

We hope you'll join us in thanking Pam for this gift of creative artistry over such a long period. If you have any quilt-related memories, anecdotes, or appreciation you'd like to share with Pam, please get in touch with us!

Then, we publish everything in an anthology. You have until the end of August to submit something.

This year we're up to Versions Tuawhā - the fourth version of Versions.

Future Living Skills

Want to learn how to save money on your power bill? Grow a new garden? How to reduce your waste? Clever tips and tricks to make your home more energy efficient?

Future Living Skills was developed collaboratively by local government in NZ and is supported by Palmerston North City Council. It is published by independent charity Sustainable Living Education Trust.

The 2023 Programme will run for eight Mondays: 27th March to 29 May (with a 2 week break for the school holidays).
The workshops will be held at Te Patikitiki Library, from 10am - 12 noon.
The programme is free though koha is appreciated.

Even though the series will have started by the time you read this, there might still be spaces available! Register at enm.org.nz or email support@enm.org.nz

Dates and Times

Overdrive/Libby App

A long time ago (cue timelapse of stars wheeling overhead while Morgan Freeman narrates) Overdrive notified us that they would be migrating to a new app called Libby. This app gives you access to ebooks, e-audiobooks, and even e-magazines.

You can use it on your phone, tablet or computer.

Libby went live but they kept the original app going while people changed over. The changeover period is coming to an end, so if you haven't already switched to Libby, now is the time!

If you have any questions about this, please get in touch.

Just a reminder that there are two great ebook/e-audio apps: Libby and Borrowbox. There's some crossover in their collections, but each has a slightly different offering. Again, contact us if you'd like to know more.

Writers In Conversation

The 'Off The Page' programme resumes on Wednesday 26th April 6.30pm with a 'Writing for Children' panel, featuring some of Aotearoa's brightest creative talent!

Panellists: Brigid Feehan, Anna Mackenzie, Philippa Werry, and Kate De Goldi, in conversation with Dr. Gigi Fenster.

Random Linkage

Random cool/interesting stuff from around the net.

A great bilingual article about the Māoriland Film Festival - "the biggest celebration of indigenous film in the Southern Hemisphere".

How well do you know your Bridgerton books? Here's a Stuff.co.nz quiz where you have to put them in order.

A debut self-published author from Aotearoa tells how he sold thousands of copies of his book. Wow, he must be a good writer! You only sell that many copies as an unknown author if your book is really good. Find out for yourself - reserve it here.

If you've ever wanted to swing a lightsabre - and don't go pretending you haven't! - you'll be a joyful Jedi when you hear that Palmerston North has it's own branch of the New Zealand Lightsaber [sic] Guild. Join up and you'll be notified when the next meet is being held. The lightsabres aren't real (the real ones can only be used by someone who actually wields the Force). So it's safe, it's fun, and it teaches you some basic fencing techniques. It's a very inclusive sport too. The local chapter has people of all ages, and you can do it in a wheelchair too. The sabres used are a little pricey, but the lovely local organisers will lend you one if you ask beforehand. Get started now and you'll be ready for Star Wars Day (May the Fourth be with you).

Finally, here's a great article about a day in the life of a children's librarian at a public library.
