The Ascendancy of Alan

We're very excited to announce that the irrepressible Alan Dingley will soon be back as a staff member at Palmerston North City Library. Alan has accepted the position of Te Pātikitiki Librarian, and we can't wait to see what shenanigans he gets up to... er, we mean, what proactive workplace initiatives he facilitates.

You may have seen an announcement that Alan was recently named Te Awhi Rito NZ Reading Ambassador. He served as convenor of judges for the NZ Book Awards for children and young adults in 2021, most recently served as Librarian at Palmerston North Intermediate School, previously worked as Young Adult Librarian for the City Library, and also pops up in the most surprising manner as part of the SpontaneoUS theatresports group. Phew!

Book Launch

Thursday May 11th, 5:30pm on the Mezzanine Floor of Central Library - come along and meet author Riley Chance and see if he answers the question posed in his book: it couldn't happen in New Zealand, could it?

From the blurb:

ProtectNZ, and their populist slogan “Protecting the lives of ordinary New Zealanders”, is gaining popularity. Grace worries they’re treating democracy as a game, a game they’re playing well. When their charismatic leader is shot, interest in ProtectNZ only increases.

"a thought-provoking political thriller with just the right blend of action, unforgettable characters, and a riveting plot that examines a multitude of societal issues.” - NZ Booklovers.

Mobile Library Timetable Tweaks

The Mobile Library has made a few changes to its stops and times. It's very similar to before, but please check the timetable on our website before you make your next visit.

A reminder about Mobile Library services: the Mobile has a representative selection of Library materials, but you can also reserve books from any other Library location and the Mobile will bring them to you! Pop in and say hi, and see what treasures are onboard!

NZ Music Month

May is New Zealand Music Month.

The Central Library is hosting performances and displays throughout the month.

We also have some suggestions for ways to celebrate Music Month, and local music.

For example, did you know the Central Library has an acoustic guitar you can use inhouse, for free? Just show your library card!

Check the What's On page to keep up to date as more things are added!

Pink Shirt Day

Do you like kindness? So do we!

Celebrate kindness and inclusivity by wearing a pink shirt on May 19.

From the official website:

Pink Shirt Day is about more than just wearing a pink t-shirt, it’s a time to show your aroha and commitment to creating a kinder, more inclusive Aotearoa where everyone feels safe, valued, and respected regardless of gender identity, sexual orientation, age, ability, religion or cultural background.

Random Linkage

Random cool/interesting stuff from around the net.

Here's a Dominic Hoey interview, with an incredibly click-baity title, from Newsroom.co.nz. Dominic's book Poor People With Money is a portrait of the seedy life and poor decisions of Monday Woolridge, a down-on-her-luck kickboxer with just enough smarts to get herself in serious trouble.

Since it's New Zealand Music Month, it's a great time to have a look at the National Library's Archive of New Zealand Music.

There's heaps of interesting stuff that you can use to sound clever at your next gathering, over here at The Cultural Tutor. Although heavily weighted toward Western classicism (Ancient Greece and Rome) they do attempt to cover other eras and cultures, and the newsletter features music, art, and historical figures.

Dolly Parton receives honorary lifetime membership of the American Library Association in recognition of the amazing work she does in promoting reading and literacy in the United States. Go Dolly!
