Matariki | Puanga 2023

Hooray for the return of Aotearoa's newest official holiday!

Our programme of activities is coming together, so be sure to keep checking as we add cool stuff!

School Holidays

When it's school holidays, the Library always has stuff for you to do!

In collaboration with Sport Manawatū, we have POP UP play sessions. There's also Matariki, Versions with a writing workshop and an animated film screening as part of the July Football Fun Festival.  We also have Kirsty Bennett (author), Andrew Wilson (magician) and Erin Willson (author) visiting Central and/or across our other library locations.

For all the happenings, you can find this info on the website's What's On page.

What's On

Laurie Winkless Author Talk

Rockstar science communicator Laurie Winkless is the one to answer the tricky questions in life: How does paint stick around so long? How does human touch work? And the perennial bugbear: Does pushing the button at a crossing do anything?

A former employee of the National Physical Laboratory in London, Winkless now lives in Aotearoa, and she absolutely loves talking about science. You can learn more about her from this Stuff.co.nz article.

Winkless' latest book is called Sticky: The Secret Science of Surfaces. See her on July 26th at the Central Library.

What's On

Hell Reading Challenge

Surely one of the longest-running and most effective reading programmes in the country ever, the Hell Reading Challenge is on again this year.

And it's so easy: read some books, report to a librarian, go to Hell (Pizza), get a free pizza.

A fiendishly clever way to get reluctant readers reading.

Be like Dante Alighieri and see if you can complete nine circles!

Blueprint Makerspace in "Library Life" Article

City Library's Blueprint Makerspace is right on the front cover of LIANZA's June edition of Te Rau Ora Library Life magazine!

If you haven't been to a makerspace before, it's best described as a space where you can make stuff. Head along to be amazed, as you'll discover much more than just 3D printers. With everything from laser cutters to sewing machines, and a cadre of helpful, knowledgable staff, if you can dream it up they can probably help you make it!

"Classic NZ Album" Poll

True Colours by Split Enz was voted '#1 Classic NZ Album' in an Audioculture poll recently.

You can borrow it (and others on the list) from the City Library's vinyl collection, and hear it in the original analogue style.

Is your favourite album in the top ten?

Also, here's a related article about the state of vinyl in Aotearoa.

Random Linkage

Random cool/interesting stuff from around the net.

The jokes in this newsletter may be stale but at least they aren't 540 years old like these ones! If you've ever thought about preserving your wit for future generations, now is the time to scan the notes from your stand-up routine and put them on Manawatū Heritage.

People are getting really-mad about incorrect hyphen-usage. Well, they should-be. Join the outrage by reading-this-article and then phone a friend to describe when and why you would happily break those rules, and when you'd defend them with your last-breath.

Kaylee Bell, a country musician from Aotearoa, is the first-ever independent female country artist to be accredited gold for a single or EP in Australia. Congratulations Kaylee!

Here's a cool list of books that don't exist. Some authors are people who love books so much that they'll write books about other books that aren't real. That's true dedication! Just please don't ask us to Interloan the original, unabridged version of S. Morgenstern's The Princess Bride...

Do the US vs UK book cover poll and join in the age-old argument of which is better!

Finally, see how the English language has a centuries-long history of borrowing words from other languages, in this wonderful article.

Milky Way Photos

Once again, photographers from Aotearoa feature in the annual Milky Way Photographer of the Year awards. Gorgeous!

Dive into this compilation of fun book-related facts. (Note: none of these have been fact-checked by PN City Library, but it's still a fun read!)
