Roslyn Library Reopens!

With great pleasure we announce that Roslyn Library is open again! It's back to the usual hours now that some building issues have been remedied.

Please pop in to say hi to the Roslyn staff - they've missed you!

Manawatū Guardian Column

August sees the start of a new Library column in the Manawatū Guardian newspaper. Once a month we'll be highlighting City Library-related things in this excellent community paper.

Did you know you can pick up copies at the City Library? Well, you can!

Poetry Day 2023

We're stretching National Poetry Day into a whole week, from the 21st to the 27th of August. Even though the official day is only on the 25th, we're claiming poetic licence.

There'll be a visit from acclaimed poet Robert Sullivan, as well as activities, workshops, and as many similes and metaphors as you can carry!

Alan's Amplification Article

We're incredibly proud to have Alan Dingley, Te Awhi Rito NZ Reading Ambassador, working at Palmerston North City Library as Te Pātikitiki Community Librarian. Here is a great article from him, asking you to join in and help "amplify" the love of reading!

A Call To Action

Activist In Residence Talk

Anjum Rahman gives a talk on "Islamophobia and Digital Regulation: Responding to the Christchurch Call" on Wed August 23, 12 noon, at the Central Library, Mezzanine Floor.

Anjum is founder and project co-lead of Inclusive Aotearoa Collective Tāhono, as well as a founding member of the Islamic Women’s Council of New Zealand, among many other things -- too many to list here! The Activist in Residence programme is brought to you by CARE: the Centre for Culture-Centred Approach to Research and Evaluation.

Beanstack Reading Challenge

Help celebrate the New Zealand Book Awards for Children and Young Adults --winners to be announced on August 10, 2023.

Read from the amazing shortlist of finalists or choose to read from some of your favourites. Undertake activities and earn online badges with Beanstack. Complete the challenge and you could win one of the books.

To complete the Challenge you have to read at least one book, write at least one book review, plus earn any other 4 badges of your choice (you don't have to earn all the badges - but hey that would be amazing!).

Classics Week 7-13 August

This programmes celebrates 50 years of Classical Studies at Te Kunenga ki Pūrehuroa Massey University. In this context, the word "Classical" refers to the roots of modern Western civilisation, specifically the cultures of ancient Greece and Rome.

We'll have activities to suit a wide range of ages, with Greek dancing and cooking, a special LibLab session, and themed sessions for Baby Bop and Jumping Jellybeans.

Poetry Day 2023

Thanks to the wonderful people at MAVTech (Museum of Audio Visual Technology in Foxton) we are going to have a display of cool old movie cameras and camcorders in the Central Library's Sound & Vision area on the Mezzanine Floor, from September 4 - 22.

Accompanied by film clips from Manawatū Heritage which were filmed in the corresponding eras, this display promises to take you on a trip back in time, especially if you remember filming things with a Super 8 camera or a VHS camcorder!

Random Linkage

Random cool/interesting stuff from around the net.

Eleanor Catton's Birnam Wood is on Barack Obama's reading list. And NZ group The Beths are on his playlist!

Siouxsie Wiles talks about what it feels like to be targeted when you use your expertise to stand up against misinformation.

Some people say there's no good new music being made these days, but maybe they just haven't heard of Bandcamp, where you'll find everything from Indonesian indie pop, to Scottish lever harp folk-jazz. They write features like Best Soul, and Best Contemporary Classical. Bandcamp is a really global music site. If someone writes about the best punk releases, it will be so wide-ranging that you'll get a 1987 demo from a Uruguayan band, alongside a new release from a feminist punk group from Madrid. One of the very best features of Bandcamp is that any purchase you make, the money goes straight to the artist (minus some small fees), and many bands also sell merch through the site. Such a great way to support artists!

Barbie

Luke Buckmaster on Flicks.co.nz calls the new Barbie movie "a wild and weird feminist statement".

Best TV Shows

Best shows of 2023? Let the arguments begin!

Bobbie Dolls?

Completely unrelated to the post above, we set up a photo booth for Bobbie and Ben dolls to pose at the Central Library recently. It was wonderful to be graced by their plastic presence.
